The number of participants – both members and non-members – across all Y programs has been rising for some time. In 2016 alone, participation was up 10%. This is GREAT NEWS! It means that we are providing valuable services that are in demand, but it also means that our campus gets tighter and tighter and tighter.
Many of you know that we have a dream of building a new, larger facility and renovating our existing main building to create a center of healthy living for our entire community. In keeping with our strategic plan, we aim to create not just a better place for fitness activities (which it definitely will be), but also a hub of resources, a place where community collaborations thrive. We envision an environment where healthcare professionals, personal trainers, chronic disease support services, senior care providers, educators, and others are invited to share resources and approach the needs of our community together. This model is spreading at YMCAs across the country and is proving to be both popular and effective.
This project will take millions of dollars and a few years to complete, but we will start to see results this year! Our board recently voted to move forward with the first phase in 2017 – a $750,000 renovation and expansion of the existing building.
When completed, there will be larger free-weight and spin areas, room for five new treadmills and two new strength-training machines, a larger lobby designed for social interactions, better customer service and pedestrian flow, and additional office and program space for Y leaders and community partners to collaborate under the same roof.
