Deborah Passero, Healthy Living and Membership Director, is passionate about serving the community. While earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Supervision at Purdue University, she was inspired to obtain her IDEA Group Exercise Certification. Deborah raised her four children and worked as a Sales Rep and Administrator for AFLAC in Michigan. She made the passion to transition into the Health and Fitness Industry by earning her second Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology/Cardiac Rehab from Michigan State University.
Deborah’s career in fitness took off when she obtained Personal Training Certifications from National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and worked at the Westside Community YMCA of Lansing as Fitness Coordinator. While there for seven years she enjoyed developing classes and programs for youth, adults and seniors. She served members with well over 12,000 hours of Personal Training; while, writing grants for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Program, Childhood Obesity, Active Older Adults and FitStart. Deborah continued with her Personal Training Certification with Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), and WholyFit with a focus on bible verses and worship music, Gentle Body Power which offers MAT muscle activation technique and flexibility. Deborah also worked with the Greater Grand Rapids YMCA teaching cycling, cardio/strength and Personal Training. Deborah teaches these Marco YMCA classes: Cardio/Strength/Core, WholyFit Gentle Body Power, and Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s Disease.
Deborah had enjoyed serving the Marco Family YMCA community since May of 2014. She and her husband enjoy serving the community together as well as spending time with their family.
Kathy Kurtz is a full time Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor. Raised on the family farm in rural Watsontown, Pennsylvania, Kathy left her small town to attend Penn State University in 1986. After Graduating with Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Dance in 1990, Kathy moved to Miami where she performed in Theatrical productions, films and television commercials. She is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association. After a decade in the performing arts, Kathy decided to focus more on the area of health and fitness and earned her AFAA Group Fitness Instructor Certification and AFFA Personal Trainer Certification. She is also a certified instructor in Yoga, Pilates and TRX®.
Kathy has been a fitness instructor in Watsontown, Pennsylvania; Canton, Maine; Houston, Texas; Naples, Florida; and Marco Island, FL. She relocated to Naples in 2003.
Marco Y classes Kathy teaches include Cardio/Strength, TRX, Drums, Power Yoga and Pilates.
Though she loves teaching classes, today her focus is on private training, where she can give one-on-one attention. As a trainer, Kathy focuses on the needs of the client and helps with weight loss, strengthening, cardio endurance, flexibility, rehabilitation, posture and balance. In addition to her enthusiasm for fitness and the arts, Kathy loves boating, photography, and time with husband, Matt Crowder, and her dog, Dex. She loves living on the Isles of Capri.
Carla Bottalia’s interest in health and fitness began with working as a Recreation Leader for the Chicago Park District while in high school and college. She focused on the medical and wellness aspect after graduation from Loyola University with a BS in Nursing. Working both in the clinical setting, as well as teaching and administration, provided her with a strong foundation in the health care industry.
After moving to Marco in 1996 her focus changed to health promotion and maintenance as a means to impact a wider population. She found herself, both personally and professionally, drawn to exercise and wellness, holistic healing and Eastern Traditions. Carla is currently an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Personal Trainer and Zen Yoga Organization Yoga Instructor and continues to expand her knowledge of QiGong and complementary medicine as well. Whether studying with QiGong masters in China or Shaman in Peru, Carla can never learn enough! She has been with YMCA approximately eight years and thoroughly enjoys and is continually inspired by the members she is privileged to meet.
Carla has a son residing in San Diego and a daughter in Naples who she is very proud of. Additionally, her interests are ballroom dancing, hiking, reading, movies and metaphysics.
Carla’s classes at the Marco Family YMCA incorporate a holistic approach to health and fitness. Participants in Fit4Life, Functional Activities and Back to Basics can expect to be exposed to a variety of fun and interesting options to assist with their healthy living options.
Carole Shea has lived on Marco Island for thirty years. She works at the Marriott as a Beverage Captain in the Banquet Department for twenty-four years. She enjoys baking even though she doesn’t have a lot of time to do it. Carole played basketball in High School and College which is probably why she enjoys exercising.
Carole has a BA in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She taught school in New Jersey which explains her love of teaching. Her classes at the Y include: Cardio Strength, Step-N-Strength and Zumba.
Students in Carole’s classes are known for the many push-ups they do. She tries to make her classes doable yet challenging for everyone. Laughter plays a key role in her classes.
Carole has an ACE Group Fitness Certification, Zumba Certification, Kickboxing Certification and National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) Personal Trainer Certification.
